Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail
Fire Recovery Experience
The Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail was ravaged by the January 3, 2020 bushfire on Kangaroo Island, resulting in it being closed for many months.
On December 1, 2020 the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail will reopen again to day walkers only on a revised Trail to accommodate the damage caused by the bushfire.
The Trail will remain a 5 day walk with options to walk fewer days for those who are time poor.
While there was enormous fire damage to the Flinders Chase National Park and therefore the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail, the regrowth is sensational. The Trail is now extremely scenic with views never seen before.
The coastal sections are spectacular as always, but the surprise is the changes to the inland sections.
The scenery is so different, and the glimpses of the coastal areas add a new dimension to the walking experience. Nature shows off her resilience and ability to recover from such devastation.

Jackie and Kevin’s experience!
“My husband and I recently hiked the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail – KWIT. We travelled with our camper van and stayed at the Western KI Caravan Park.
We chose this park for its convenient location to the trail and for the range of services the park offers to people who are walking the trail.
We chose the daily trail transfer option. Each morning we were taken by mini bus to the trail and after a day walking, each afternoon we were collected and returned to the park for an appreciated hot shower in the park’s spotless facilities and the comfort our camper van.
The transfers mini bus is driven by Mark who is friendly, safety conscious and efficient. One day the power on the island was out and so there was a possibility the satellite phone that was provided to us would not work. At the end of that day’s walk Mark was already waiting to collect us!
We are happy to highly recommend both the Western KI Caravan Park and the trail services they offer.
Fiona and Mark who are the owner/managers of the park will go out of their way to ensure you have the best experience possible both at their peaceful park and out on the Wilderness Trail.”
